3 in stolen car arrested after chase in Clay; drugs recovered, deputies say – syracuse.com
Clay, N.Y. — Three people were arrested after leading sheriff’s deputies on a chase through Clay Wednesday morning, deputies said.
A deputy on Henry Clay Boulevard spotted a 2016 Chevy Equinox without its lights on at 12:03 a.m., according to a news release from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
The car was stolen from Rome but had a different license plate on it, deputies said. The plate, however, had been stolen off a car at Destiny USA, deputies said.
Deputies tried to stop the car but the driver sped off, they said.
The car turned into the Wild Creek neighborhood off of Buckley Road and deputies lost sight of the car, they said. The car was found unoccupied in the neighborhood.
Two K9 units started to track the people who ran from the car, deputies said.
The sheriff’s office helicopter, Air 1, located the three people in the woods behind a home on Rabbit Run using infrared cameras, deputies said. Deputies on the ground arrested them, they said.
The three arrested were the driver, James Dougherty, 39, of North Syracuse, and two passengers: Zachary Grant, 35, of Martville (Cayuga County) and Sarah Fletcher, 28, of Syracuse.
All three were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, deputies said.
Dougherty was issued tickets for third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless driver, unlicensed operation, improper plates and driving with no headlamps, deputies said.
All three are being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center and will be arraigned Wednesday morning, deputies said.
