Police warn of tainted drugs in the Ithaca area that could lead to overdoses – 14850

“Drugs being sold in cocaine in our area do not in fact contain any cocaine, but instead contain opiates,” according to an alert issued by the Ithaca Police Department on Friday. “This can cause individuals to overdose, potentially fatally.”
“IPD would like to urge caution to anyone addicted to, or using narcotics recreationally,” the police say.
According to Chief David Honan of the Cornell University Police Department, IPD advised CUPD of recent incidents involving students off-campus.
“Under Cornell’s Good Samaritan Protocol (“Good Sam”), those who call for help – and those who receive help – in an alcohol- or drug-related emergency are protected from judicial consequences,” according to Cornell Health. “If you think your friend may have had too much to drink, is having an adverse reaction to a drug, or if they have sustained a head injury while drinking or using other drugs, it is imperative you call 911.”
“IPD has recently responded to several similar overdoses and would like to bring awareness to this issue,” Friday’s statement says.
