A McHenry man who sold heroin that caused the overdose death of a 32-year-old man was sentenced on Friday to six years in prison.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force arrested Stanley J. Rzepka, 30, of the 800 block of West Route 176 in McHenry, in September 2020.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was called on May 31, 2020, to a residence in the 2500 block of Birchwood Avenue in unincorporated McHenry for a death investigation of a 32-year-old man.
The man was identified as Sean Steinberg. The case was turned over to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police Narcotics Task Force.
A three-month investigation was conducted where detectives worked closely with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office to collect evidence, sheriff’s officials said.
During the investigation, detectives found evidence indicating that Steinberg had used heroin prior to his death.
Prosecutors said Steinberg’s cause of death was from adverse effects of heroin.
Steinberg had been communicating with Rzepka the evening of his death regarding a drug transaction involving heroin, prosecutors said.
Rzepka admitted to participating in the conversation and meeting up with Steinberg the night of his death.
The U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Rzepka as he was leaving the McHenry County courthouse on another matter.
He was charged with drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 2 felony.
Rzepka pleaded guilty on Friday to unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.
McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt sentenced the man to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The sentence will be served at 50% and Rzepka will receive 569 days of credit for time already served, court documents show.
