Drug investigation results in several Holyoke arrests – MassLive.com

HOLYOKE — An ongoing investigation into illegal drug sales in a localized area of Elm Street in Holyoke over the past week has resulted in several arrests and the confiscation of cocaine and heroin, police said.
Capt. Matthew Moriarty, commander of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, said late in the day on Thursday narcotic detectives observed a “hand-to-hand” drug sales in the area of 291 Elm St. and were able to effect two arrests.
Luis Medina, 32, of Holyoke was charged with possession of a Class A substance, Possession with the intent to distribute a Class A substance, possession of a Class B substance and possession with the intent to distribute a Class B substance and arrest on an outstanding warrant.
Israel Melendez, 42, also of Holyoke was charged with possession of a Class A substance and possession with the intent to distribute a Class A substance.
Moriarty said detectives continued their investigation on Friday and just before 11 a.m. observed suspicious activity in a building at 294 Elm St. Detectives and uniformed officers conducted a property check and as they approached the top floor of the building saw three suspects huddled in the hallway.
One of the suspects tried to run away, throwing packets of drugs as he ran. He was chased down, and all three men were arrested.
Mickie Barreto, 36, of Holyoke was charged with possession of a Class B substance, possession of a Class B substance with the intent to distribute and trespassing.
Julio Alviles, 31, of Holyoke, was arrested and charged with possession a Class A substance, possession with the intent to distribute a Class A substance, possession of a Class B substance, possession of a Class B substance with the intent to distribute and trespass.
Israel Bonilla, Jr., 37, also of Holyoke was charged with trespass.
All the defendants were arraigned in Holyoke District Court.
