Corporal accused of smuggling drugs into Nebraska State Penitentiary, court records show – Lincoln Journal Star

A 34-year-old corporal with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services was arrested on Tuesday after he was allegedly caught smuggling more than 50 grams of suspected methamphetamine into the State Penitentiary in Lincoln last week, according to court filings.

Staff at the facility found Edgar Gomez of La Vista had a beverage can with a hidden compartment as he entered the prison for work Friday, according to the affidavit for his arrest. 
Correctional staff members weren’t immediately able to open the can and instructed Gomez to report to his duty location as normal, State Patrol Investigator Nathan Eymann wrote in the affidavit. 
By the time staff opened the compartment — discovering plastic baggies with 57.2 grams of meth and 65.1 grams of marijuana — Gomez had left the facility, Eymann wrote. 
Gomez was arrested Tuesday at a traffic stop in Omaha after investigators had staked out his house in La Vista, Eymann wrote. He was charged in Lancaster County on Wednesday with possession and delivery of meth. 
The 34-year-old paid $10,000 to be released from the county jail on a $100,000 percentage bond, according to court filings.

A week before his suspension, Luke Bonkiewicz’s name appeared on a journal article in Police Quarterly examining instances of sexual violence against women within police departments. His name since has been removed from the article. 

The commotion started at around 1 a.m. when a Lincoln man was removed from The Fat Toad Pub after being belligerent and starting a fight within the bar, police said. He was hospitalized after smashing through the bar’s front window.

Officers saw the man looking over the overpass toward the ground below, prompting police to search the area, LPD said. Police found a backpack with 26 THC vape cartridges, a jar of lemon cake-flavored THC wax and the cash.

The move came roughly two weeks after Madsen’s Bowling & Billiards pleaded guilty by waiver to six cases for violating public health orders. In exchange, four others were dismissed. 

An undercover officer met with the 32-year-old woman in a pharmacy parking lot three times last month to buy a half-gram of heroin each time, according to the affidavit for her arrest. 

Lincoln Fire and Rescue Capt. Nancy Crist said no one was injured in the fire, which took several hours to fully extinguish while gutting a $236,000 house near 19th and South. 

In a message sent to parents Friday morning, Principal Liz Miller said Dawes is working with Lincoln police and the school district’s security team to investigate the incidents.

Brandon T. Davis, 38, will face at least 25 years in federal prison when he’s sentenced in May for it, according to the plea agreement that caps his sentence at 27½ years.
